Fall 2007
Dear Members & Friends:
We are thrilled to announce the Bristol Historical Society’s newest exhibition, “Made in Bristol,” which highlights Bristol’s industrial heritage showing some of the companies and the generations of people that were part of this great period. It is our hope that visitors will learn about how manufacturing and industry involved almost everyone in the city, and that it was the center of their lives and their community.
Bristol fostered hundreds of companies, both large and small, that made a huge range of products that were sold around the world. By walking through the exhibit, visitors will learn about many of the common products from the past, and the ones still used today that were invented and perfected here in Bristol.
The exhibit uses the workbench as a display format to present photos, business histories, personal stories and products. The workbench is an ever-present component of all manufacturing, changing only slightly through hundreds of years of creating. The workbench connects us to our ancestors who worked in the mills and factories and made lives for themselves and their families.
The workbench stations show a sampling of the many companies that once existed, the tools that were used, and the products made. Two replica workstations are displayed, one of a tool and die maker from the 1960s and the other of a clock maker from the late 1800s.
This exhibit is also an opportunity to recognize the contributions of the Barnes Group, Inc., which is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year ad is a major sponsor of the exhibit. From its early beginnings as a metal parts shop, the Barnes companies of today have become diversified leaders in engineering and manufacturing precision metal components and an international distributor of other production supplies.
Please make time to stop by and see this exhibition, and catch up with the latest building renovations. Membership support is critical to the success of this organization we look forward to seeing you!
Sincerely,
Tyrone Mellon
